K-pop Birthday Cafes in Seoul — How They Work
Last checked: October 1, 2026
A birthday cafe (생일카페, "saengka") is a fan-run event: fans rent a regular cafe for a few days around an idol's birthday and fill it with photos, banners and themed decorations. They're free to enter, and they're one of the best ways to meet other fans in Seoul.
Who runs them
Birthday cafes are organised by fans — usually well-known fansites or fan accounts — not by agencies. That's why details are announced on X (Twitter) and Instagram, often just a week or two before.
Where they are
Most birthday cafes cluster in a few neighbourhoods:
- Mapo-gu — Hongdae, Sinchon, Hapjeong. The biggest concentration, with cafes that host fan events almost every week.
- Seongsu-dong. Design cafes and pop-up spaces, popular for bigger and more photogenic events.
How a visit works
- Check the announcement for dates, opening hours and rules. Popular cafes can have queues or timed entry on the birthday itself.
- Order a drink. Most cafes give a set of freebies with each drink — cup sleeves, photo cards, stickers, slogans.
- Freebies are first come, first served. Specific items run out quickly, especially on the birthday.
- Lucky draws. Many cafes run draws for extra goods; read the rules in the announcement.
Etiquette
- Don't take more freebies than one set per order.
- Ask before photographing other fans.
- Don't move or remove decorations.
- Remember the cafe is a business. Buy something, and keep noise down for other customers.
Plan a trip around a birthday
Birthday cafes usually run for a few days before and after the birthday. Open your bias's page from the groups list and use "Plan a trip for this birthday", or enter your dates in the trip planner — birthdays during your trip are flagged automatically.
